Sasin's Foundation and Development

The Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration was founded some 23 years ago in a collaboration among the pre-eminent university in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University and what were to become two of the leading business schools in the world—the Kellogg School of Management and the Wharton School.

Back in the 1970s, Thailand was in the midst of major social and economic transformations. Heady with immense flows of foreign direct investment and an economy primed for take off, the business community in Thailand faced a dilemma—how could the economy continue to meet the skyrocketing demand for effective managers and leaders? What the country needed was a world-class business school to help produce the needed business administrators and leaders.

We established Sasin by modifying Kellogg's curriculum and academic regulations, and by granting permission to Kellogg and Wharton faculty to teach at Sasin, a model that has since been adopted by other prominent business schools around the world.

Kellogg and Wharton are now recognized as among the world's foremost graduate schools of management. Indeed, one of these schools has been ranked Number 1 in every single Business Week survey since 1981.

For over 20 years, the Sasin MBA program has been stressing four fundamental management skills: Communication, decision-making, leadership and teamwork. To enhance the cross-cultural experience so necessary for success in today's global economy, Sasin has established exchange programs with 16 institutions in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan and Australia.

Continuity

We have been very fortunate in that we have established a high degree of loyalty among our visiting professors. We have one visiting professor—who recently received a Sidney J. Levy Teaching Award at Kellogg—who has taught in every single year that Sasin has been in operation.

We have many visiting professors who have taught at Sasin six times or more. This builds tremendous continuity and means that even our visiting faculty feel a real sense of belonging to Sasin. They have built up a depth of experience with South-east Asia and the realities of doing business here. Of course, we continue to develop and get new faculty faces also!

I can say with complete confidence that the Sasin classrooms present some of the finest management educators in the world.

We are additionally fortunate in that our founding partner, Kellogg School of Management, continues to actively review and endorse our programs and all our faculty appointments. In fact, the Dean of Kellogg—Dipak Jain—teaches on our MBA, Executive MBA, and several of our Executive Education programs every year. This active involvement of Kellogg—the top MBA program in the world—and Dean Jain's personal interest, helps keep Sasin at the leading edge, and gives us great confidence in moving forward as a leading South-east Asia B-school.

Sasin's own faculty

Of course, our programs have developed and evolved over the years, whereas initially we taught our entire MBA and Executive MBA programs with visiting professors, we have gradually built up a core of experienced and excellently qualified full-time faculty of our own.

The Sasin faculty, who graduated from some of the world's leading business doctoral programs, provides an on-going resource for all of Sasin's program participants and has allowed the B-school to gradually expand its range of electives and concentrations, and develop special interest courses for its students.

Sasin now offers the following world-class programs:

In the latest rankings of faculty qualifications, Sasin was placed in the top 10 for the whole of Asia—not bad for a B-school which started out slightly more than two decades ago.
