On March 29, 2008, Sasin hosted its very first “Sasin EMBA 2006 Simultaneous Chess Exhibition” on the first floor of the SasinPatasalaBuilding.  Why chess?  Chess is known internationally as a game of strategy.  At the same time, strategy is a critical success factor in business today.  As chess is still known by very few in Thailand, this event helped to promote awareness of chess in the Sasin business community, and thereby “Link the Strategic Spirit of Chess and Business.”

The event’s actual reach extended beyond Sasin, bringing together a diverse group of players with multiple backgrounds and nationalities.  Ages ranged from age 8 to 71.  One challenger, Ralph Zingle (EMBA 2006), played remotely from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania through a high-speed Internet connection – over 14,000km away!  Participants could see and hear Ralph play in real-time as he was projected from a notebook computer and LCD projector.

In all, 30 challengers competed simultaneously against two of Thailand’s highest-ranked Chess Masters:  Aung Kyaw Moe (#6 in Thailand) and Jirapak Pitirotjirathon (#3 in Thailand).  Aung, who is also a member of EMBA 2006, competed against one set of 15 challengers, while Jirapak competed against a second set of 15 challengers at the same time.

Opening speeches were given by Director Toemsakdi Krishnamra, Surawat “Sam” Promyotin (President, EMBA 2006), Kai Tuorila (Chairman, Bangkok Chess Club), and Panupand Vijjuprabha (International Arbiter of Chess), followed by an exciting demonstration of “blitz” high-speed chess.  The actual simultaneous exhibition was then officially opened by the customary first moves made by presiding dignitaries: Director Toemsakdi Krishnamra and Deputy Director Kittiratt Na-Ranong.

After several hours of intense game-play, all challengers were defeated one-by-one, except for just 4 draws and 1 win.  Beautiful Sasin-DTAC Chess Trophies for the top 3 challengers went to the following incredible young players:

1st Place - Kritanat Karronyavanich [12yrs old]

2nd Place - Ratchaphon Thanarotrung [14yrs old]

3rd Place - Nattapol Jatoorakosol [16yrs old]

Certificates of Participation were awarded to all chess challengers, Sasin jackets were presented to event collaborators from the Bangkok Chess Club and the Thailand Chess Association, and Chess Master appreciation trophies were awarded to Aung and Jirapak.

The overall event was truly a team effort between Sasin EMBA 2006, the Bangkok Chess Club, the Thailand Chess Association, supporters from Sasin Staff and Administrators, and the following corporate sponsors:  DTAC, IBM, Nokia-Siemens Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, Oishi, Coffio, 2C2P, Tellabs, Namyuenyong Shipping, Namyong Terminal, South City Group, and General Candy.
