This Level 1 course provides a thorough understanding of the English sound system to enable participants to understand rapid speech and build the confidence they need to respond using clear correct pronunciation. Participants learn to produce sounds used in native spoken English, focusing on stress, intonation, and pitch, to help them speak with a correct accent and appropriate tone of voice . As they discover how English vowel/consonant sounds link together, their listening comprehension automatically improves so they can listen and understand daily conversations better. As all class work has a business context, participants also learn vocabulary to express their ideas more concisely.

Some students have requested this "back to the basics" review of the parts of speech and sentence formation so that they can finally master the use of fundamental grammar. This course aims to help participants understand and appropriately respond to the rapid speech of native speakers in various formal and informal settings. It helps participants speak more fluently and naturally using appropriate tone, intonation and body language. Participants will practice listening to models of rapid speech (teleconferences, news broadcasts, and movies) and study how vocabulary is chosen to express ideas concisely and with more sophistication. Participants will be trained to enhance their accent and image when interacting or presenting in English so that they convey a professional image. This course is excellent preparation for other advanced speaking courses.

Writing Clinic
This course is designed to let business people improve the quality of the writing they do at work. The aim is to develop writing competency, not broad language proficiency. The first class is held at Sasin, but most of the work is done via e mail. Participants will submit one work sample of 400 words per week to the instructor and get personal oneonone tutoring. The instructor will comment on the grammar, style, tone and organization of each writing sample. The writer then revises it accordingly. Participants can worki at their own speed but the instructor will send reminders that time is running out. A maximum of 8 writing samples can be submitted within the 8 week course.
