Three Tips to Survive a Disrupted World

26 Jul 2019
July 20, 1969… The day the world awaited had arrived. Apollo 11 landed and Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. It was an outstanding moment in history: If we could send a man to the moon, there could be no challenge humans could not conquer. No challenge? Is that possible? Since the moon landing, and especially since the turn of the century, the world has never been the same. It has been disrupted by the introduction of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence or AI. AI can work 24 hours, never sleeps, never gets tired and never complains. No human can do anything comparable. Today, jobs are being transformed and workers laid off because of AI. Many people wonder whether humans are still important in this disruptive world. To try to find answer to this question, we interviewed Assist.Prof.Piyachart Phiromswad, Ph.D, Director of Sasin Executive Education. He provided three tips to survive this disruptive era:   1. DON’T PANIC Take a deep breath and relax. There are plenty of soft skills that AI cannot replace. Creativity, communication, management, leadership, and negotiations are great examples. When customers are upset, your voice intonation, vocabulary, eyes, and your body language convey how much you care about them. Empathy is a trait unique to humans which cannot be imitated by AI. Moreover, as IBM CEO Ginni Rometty said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, “Artificial intelligence will replace some jobs, but most humans will be working (together) with AI systems.” Instead of competition, a better way to think about the future with AI would be to think of it as an enhancement to the abilities and performance of human beings. You might have an AI buddy in the future, but you will still count. Like the Apollo 11 team, keep your imagination and dreams alive.   2. CHANGE Until 20 years ago, CU-Writer was Thailand’s most successful writing program. But that was before Bill Gates introduced the world to Microsoft Word. Today, new technologies emerge every minute. More, technologies that are important today may not even be around tomorrow. To survive, you need to change!  Charles Darwin, Father of Evolution, said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” Keep in mind that the only certainty in this disruptive era is constant change. Embrace it and be prepared for it, and you will have a place. But you will need to develop one more skill…   3. LEARN, UNLEARN, AND RELEARN With the accelerated change of this era, the knowledge you gained from your university days is largely obsolete today. This is sad but true. Mr. Paron Israsena Na Ayudhya, the former Director of Sasin School of Management once observed, “Only 30% of the knowledge that I have learned can be used today.” In order to survive and thrive in this disruptive world, we have to unlearn the old so that we can relearn the new. It is important to cultivate the habit of continuous learning. Like eating, learning should be a day-to-day practice that you cannot skip. Today, it’s not the smartest people who will be successful in this disruptive. Rather, it will be the fastest and quickest learners. ——————- Would you like to learn more about disruptive leadership?
