Your Master’s thesis project represents a major portion of the Dual MBA & Master of Engineering Program. The thesis is written with the support and guidance of faculty members and practitioners/industry partners. Your thesis will emphasize the importance of applying theory to solve real-life industry problems. Your Master’s thesis will give you an opportunity to reflect on and summarize your practical work experiences, either from before joining the program or from an optional internship during your second year of the program, while making an intellectual contribution to the field of operations. Your practical work experiences and/or internship serve as the source of research for the thesis, incorporating both engineering and management issues, leading to the development of the scope and content of your research topic. Upon completion of your thesis, you will present your findings and recommendations to your thesis committee and sponsoring companies.

Full-Time MBA

The program can be completed in two years if you choose to take two MBA courses each module (a full-time load). You will earn your MBA degree in the first 15 months, the same time as your classmates in the Flexible MBA program who have also chosen to take two MBA courses in each module. Classes are usually held Monday-Friday, between 8:30-16:30. In the following 9 months, you will work on your Engineering thesis as part of your Master of Engineering degree.  

Part-time MBA

If you wish you may take the MBA component of the degree at only one course per module (often called part-time load and this can be in the evening if desired). In this case, you will earn your MBA in 30 months, the same time as your classmates in the Flexible MBA who have also chosen to take only one MBA course each module. Six engineering classes, however, do not have evening sessions at the moment so students have to take them during the daytime. The first year focuses on intensive coursework in the classroom. During the second year, you may take part in an optional internship working on real-world operations problems at the site of one of our industry partners. For the rest of the second year, you will write your Master’s thesis (on-campus or on-site at the company) and will take a few additional electives. When doing coursework at Sasin, Dual MBA & Master of Engineering students are fully integrated with our regular MBA courses, so students study and work with our regular Flexible MBA students. After you are done with the MBA courses at Sasin, you take the engineering courses from the Master of Engineering program of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering.  

Working as a Team

Teamwork is an important part of the course.  You will spend most of your time together in study, and in social and extra-curricular activities. Many class projects will be assigned to groups of students, rather than to individuals, and will require significant teamwork. You will typically form groups of five to seven members with diverse academic and/or professional backgrounds. Through the program, you will learn how to work effectively with others, enhance your skills in working as part of a team and develop personal friendships and life-long networks.  

Teaching Style

All courses emphasize learning from practical experience as well as from business theories. Teaching methods will include:

• lectures,
• discussions,
• case studies,
• presentations,
• simulations,
• field studies,
• and guest lectures from leading industry practitioners.

Much of the teaching will involve case discussions, or experiential activities, where you will express your own experiences and opinions. Case studies will provide you with real-life business problems to analyze and discuss in class. Teamwork, group assignments, and participation in class discussions are strong features of the program. All classes, both at Sasin and Chulalongkorn Engineering, will be conducted in English.

All MBA students must take at least one Action Learning Lab. We offer several types of Action Learning Labs. You choose the type that best fits your interests. You can take more than one if you wish. Initially, the Action Lab requirement will be satisfied by successfully completing any of the following:

• MIT-Sasin Action Learning Lab: If you want to go into consulting or work on practical projects in a specific industry, you might choose this as your Action Learning Lab.
• Sasin-China Lab: Work with MBA students from the Fudan School of Management or Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) on real client projects.
• Sustainability Lab: If you are interested in sustainability management you will want to choose this as your Action Learning Lab and work on real sustainability problems, with real businesses.
• New Ventures Lab: If you are interested in creating your own start-up, you may wish to take the New Ventures Lab

Additional Action Learning Labs will be developed from time to time, depending on student demand. It’s practical, hands-on, teamwork! All Action Learning requirements will involve some common elements, designed to reinforce Transformative Action Learning. All Action Learning Labs will involve:

• students working in teams,
• to solve real-world business problems. These practical problems might come from existing business (in the case of GIM for example), or from problems students themselves identify and choose to solve (in the case of start-up business plans for example).
• mentored by a resource team of faculty, usually assisted by specialized professionals (who will often be Sasin alumni).
• Over a sustained period
• Action Learning Labs will normally span several modules. The regular four-week module will usually not give sufficient time for an Action Learning Lab.

You can start on your Action Learning Lab any time after you have successfully completed your initial core courses. Be sure to discuss your ideas for an Action Learning Lab with a faculty member, and make sure to confirm the details with your faculty advisor(s) in writing.
