Summary: Multi-stakeholder process studies suggest that multiple stakeholders across different sectors can resolve sustainable development issues when they combine their complementary resources and capacities. Studies highlight the role of multinational enterprises (MNEs), given that they have the requisite resources and capacities. However, this role in the context of non-state cultural regions where state governance is entirely missing remains understudied. Drawing on the findings of long-term fieldwork in the Golden Triangle region near the Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos borders, this study investigated how the collective interventions of multiple stakeholders transformed the illicit drug-based economy of the region into an alternative sustainable economy and, by doing so, captures the central role of MNEs. The findings show that the foreign subsidiaries of MNEs proactively explored the unknown region and openly shared knowledge with other actors, creating synergy with marginalized local stakeholders. The resulting process model sheds light on the MNEs’ roles in various stages of the multi-stakeholder process, offering new insights into informal institutions and intercultural studies in the field of international business.   For more information please contact Khun Nanthapak Pinyo at 091 479 4551, 02 218 4036 or researchseminar@sasin.edu.
