The future of sustainable supply chains: purpose and practicality

27 Sep 2022
Changing Demands on Supply Chains Not only are we seeing real action and transformation taking place around the world in regards to sustainability, we are also starting to see collaboration among supply chain stakeholders coming together to make a difference. A panel discussion on “The Future of Sustainable Supply Chains” during last month’s SX2022 Forum featured a combination of speakers who were activists for clean air and human rights, from academics to specialists to actual practitioners. Big conglomerates often see sustainability as a mandated responsibility and financial burden. However, the panel did not. Moderated by Mr. Geert-Jan Van Der Zanden, Senior Advisor and Visiting Professor of Sustainability Leadership at Sasin School of Management (doubling as Managing Director of Xynteo), and Ms. Weenarin Lulitanonda, Co-Founder of Thailand Clean Air Network and Senior Consultant at the World Bank, educated the audience concerning the weak infrastructure to manage sustainability. There is no single agency responsible for tackling it. As world production facilities migrate from the global north to the global south developing countries, Thailand needs to begin improving its sustainability planning. Ms. Sriprapha Petcharamesree, PhD., Senior Lecturer and Chair of Human Rights and Peace Studies at Mahidol, spoke about human rights due diligence. Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has in place a human rights national action plan. Hee-Chan Song, Assistant Professor at the Sasin School of Management, shared his personal take on human rights care in a business management context. He said that corporate sustainability can be achieved with the proper mindset, character development, stakeholder understanding, and legal pressure. Finally, Mr. Setha Thavisri, a Director of Pan International (Thailand), representing the Thailand Supply Chain Network, works on streamlining sustainable procurement processes across the country and beyond. For him, the key to introducing sustainability is to educate, communicate, and connect stakeholders within the supply chain while developing their resiliency. One of the projects he is working on is digitizing their supply chain platform by allowing suppliers to create an online product listing so that buyers and sellers can operate transparently.
