At Sasin, you can eat at a canteen run by Tang Ton Dee Restart Academy, where formerly incarcerated people can earn a living and serve others while rebuilding their lives beyond stigma. Sasin is one of Restart Academy’s employment and training sites; Restart Academy’s flagship, Restart Kitchen, operates at the government-funded Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), while the organization has also expanded into salon, spa, and laundry ventures.
Sasin Associate Professor Dr. Krittinee Nuttavuthisit wrote a case study about the Restart Academy initiative, for which she was honored as the Second Place Winner in the 2026 Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets Global Case Writing Competition hosted by WDI Publishing, an initiative of the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan. The case, “Restart Academy: Serving Second Chances,” written by Dr. Krittinee, follows Phoemporn Maneesin, a business consultant and entrepreneur who became CEO of Restart Academy.
According to TIJ, roughly 200,000 people are released from prison each year in Thailand, with 140,000 needing employment. These incarcerated individuals face stigma, legal barriers, and few pathways to stable work when they re-enter the labor market. TIJ launched the Tang Ton Dee Restart Academy, a reintegration initiative that builds skills, creates job opportunities, and strengthens financial resilience for life after prison.
In support of the initiative, Dr. Krittinee has donated her 100,000-baht prize to Tang Ton Dee Restart Academy’s Emergency Assistance Fund for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals.
